Environmental indicators in Slovenia


Environmental indicators are based on graphs, maps and assessments and as such present environmental trends in Slovenia. The indicators represent one of the four pillars of our environmental reporting, and are prepared in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act. The Environmental Indicators in Slovenia website enables users to browse among 180 indicators. They are based on numerical data and they indicate the state, characteristics and trends of environmental development in Slovenia. They are prepared using a systematic approach based on data and monitoring, as shown in the information pyramid.

Comparison of periods 1961-1990 and 1991-2020 on the chosen representative stations around Slovenia shows decrease of heating degree days by around 10 % and multiple increase of cooling degree days. With projected continuous temperature raise until the end of 21st century, those trends are expected to continue. Thus, in Slovenia, energy demand for cooling will increase in the warmer period of the year, while the energy demand for heating will decrease in colder period of the year. Same trend is projected for Europe in general.

In 2012, the share of electricity generated from renewable sources in gross electricity consumption was 29.5%, which was 4.1 percentage points below the target value set for 2010. The share increased in comparison to the previous year. This is largely a consequence of higher generation of electricity from renewable sources, particularly due to higher river discharges, as gross electricity consumption was almost the same as a year earlier. In 2012, electricity generation from hydropower represented 90% of total electricity generated from RES, while its share has been in gradual decline.

Slovenia has a fairly high level of energy intensity that is decreasing, especially in the last few years. Average yearly decrease rate in the period 2005-2021 was 2.7 %. Compared to EU-27 Slovenia had 37 % higher intensity in 2020, being 11 % points lower than in 2005.

Air pollutant emissions have decreased in the period 2005−2020 to the levels that enable Slovenia achievement of its 2020 targets. But to reach 2030 targets additional decrease is needed. Reduction of emissions contributed to lower impact on ecosystems and human health, as emissions of pollutants that contribute to acidification, ozone precursors and particles, decreased by half compared to 2005.

Bad

Passenger car ownership in Slovenia has almost doubled over the last 20 years and has an above-average growth rate. It is closely connected to the use of passenger cars. Since 2008, passenger car ownership in Slovenia has been growing more slowly as a result of the economic recession. Also, motorisation level (expressed in the number of cars per thousand inhabitants) in Slovenia exceeds the average rate of motorisation in the EU as well as in numerous more economically developed EU countries.

Bad

Slovenia is at the infamous top of European countries in terms of the share of household expenditure on personal mobility. In Slovenia, households spent 17% of household funds on personal mobility. In 2021, namely 10% for operation and 6% for the purchase of vehicles. A smaller share, just over 0.5%, was allocated to public transport. This does not take into account the annual depreciation cost of the car, which is the main cost for personal mobility in many households.
