The number of inhabitants who are exposed to traffic noise along major roads outside urban areas is gradually decreasing. In 2017, around 16,000 fewer inhabitants were exposed to high road traffic noise levels throughout the day compared to 2012. There is an important difference between inhabitants who live in the impact area of major motorways and highways, and inhabitants who live in the impact area of major main and regional roads.

Because of the effectiveness of noise abatement measures along the motorway network, the number of inhabitants who are exposed to traffic noise along motorways and highways has significantly decreased. In 2017, around 2,000 inhabitants were exposed to high noise levels throughout the day. However, the number of inhabitants who live in the impact area of major and regional roads and are exposed to high noise levels remains relatively high. More than 25,000 inhabitants along major and regional roads are exposed to high noise levels throughout the day and around 30,200 inhabitants during the night.
