The quantity of end-of-life tyres collected for recovery increased dramatically when producer liability was introduced. Arround 16,000 tonnes of end-of-life tyres is produced, which is about 8kg per capita. In 2015, 65% of end-of-life-tyres have been recovered through material recovery and 35% through energy recovery.

Due to lower construction activity, material productivity in Slovenia increased faster than the EU average in the period 2007-2012. In 2018 it amounted to 1.86 PPS / kg, but the target of 3.5 PPS / kg by 2030, with the revival of  construction activity, will be difficult to achieve. Therefore, much more attention needs to be paid to measures for the transition to a circular economy.

Environmental protection is important to the residents of the EU and Slovenia. The most significant environmental issues mentioned are growing amount of waste, air pollution, and climate change. A large majority of respondents agreed with statements expressing concern about various environmental problems and acknowledging their impact on their daily lives and health.

In 2023, EU-27 net GHG emissions decreased by 8.9% compared to 2022 and was 37.3% lower than 1990. In 2023, Slovenian GHG emissions decreased by 4.8% compared to 2022. Emissions from non-ETS sectors were 4.4% lower than in 2022 and by 13.6% % lower than in 2005.

In Slovenia, the volume of passenger transport and traffic has been increasing over the past few decades. In particular, there has been a steady rise in one of the most environmentally damaging modes of transport – car travel. Its share places Slovenia in the unenviable fourth place among EU member states whose residents rely most heavily on private cars for their journeys.

Road freight transport in Slovenia has grown sharply since the country’s accession to the EU, with the volume of tonne-kilometres carried by Slovenian hauliers alone increasing more than 2.5 times between 2004 and 2024. After the pandemic-related slowdown, the volume of road freight transport returned to previous levels.
