Environmental indicators in Slovenia


Environmental indicators are based on graphs, maps and assessments and as such present environmental trends in Slovenia. The indicators represent one of the four pillars of our environmental reporting, and are prepared in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act. The Environmental Indicators in Slovenia website enables users to browse among 180 indicators. They are based on numerical data and they indicate the state, characteristics and trends of environmental development in Slovenia. They are prepared using a systematic approach based on data and monitoring, as shown in the information pyramid.

Bad

F-gas emissions from leaks from stationary installations increased significantly in 2022 due to a significantly higher use of refilled refrigerants. This represented a significant deviation from the indicative target for reducing emissions from the use of F-gases under the EU F-gases Regulation. Compared to 2015, F-gas emissions from leaks were 17% lower in 2022, while, according to the F-gases Regulation, they should have been lower by 55%.

The rate of defoliation and forest decline in Slovenia was relatively stable until 2020, with a slightly negative trend. After 2020, a deterioration of tree defoliation was observed.

The large majority of organisations from the public sector and office-based companies (e.g. banks, post offices and other administrative and office premises) believe that increased energy efficiency of business premises is very important. About three quarters of organisations in both sectors think about using the energy more efficiently. For about a third of organisations from both sectors, which think about the efficient energy consumption, its main purpose is to decrease the quantity of energy used in their business premises.

The large majority of organisations from the public and service sector believe that they are ecologically conscious and that they separate waste. The majority of organisations responded that the efficient use of energy in their business premises is important due to both reducing the costs and to protect the environment. Three quarters of companies and two thirds of public administration organisations have stated that they are well familiar with the environmental impact of their business premises.

The reporting score under the Core data flow of the European Environment Agency decreased for Slovenia in recent years. In 2019, we reached 90%, which is also the EEA target for the average of all countries. In the following years, we reached around 83%. In 2021, 6 EEA countries achieved 100% reporting, 9 countries achieved more than 90%. The 11 most important data flows, supporting major environmental decisions, were evaluated.

Air pollution is the greatest environmental risk to health and a major cause of disease and premature deaths in Europe. Pollution due to PM2.5 causes respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological and metabolic diseases. Since 2005, the number of premature deaths due to PM2.5 pollution has been decreasing in Slovenia and in EU countries. In 2019, there were 1,409 premature deaths due to PM2.5 pollution in Slovenia, and 307,000 in the European Union.
