Environmental indicators in Slovenia


Environmental indicators are based on graphs, maps and assessments and as such present environmental trends in Slovenia. The indicators represent one of the four pillars of our environmental reporting, and are prepared in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act. The Environmental Indicators in Slovenia website enables users to browse among 180 indicators. They are based on numerical data and they indicate the state, characteristics and trends of environmental development in Slovenia. They are prepared using a systematic approach based on data and monitoring, as shown in the information pyramid.

In Slovenia, nutrient overloading is still the basic problem concerning lakes and reservoirs, and from 2006 to 2019, no improvement is observed. In the assessment period 2016–2019, only 4 out of 11 lake water bodies were determined to be in good or very good trophic status. Overloading of lakes with phosphorus is usually a result of inadequate wastewater drainage and intensive agriculture in the watershed area.

Despite the fact that the level of education on Slovenian agricultural holdings has significantly improved in the period 2000-20120, it is still quite unfavourable. Still, more than half of the farmers have only practical experience with work in agriculture. In all age classes, the number of farmers who have completed one of the forms of formal agricultural education is increasing. Under the Rural Development Program 2014-2020, 133,320 participants participated in education and training in the sub-measure M01.1: Support for vocational training and skills acquisition actions.

In Slovenia, we cultivate slightly more than 8 acres (0.08 hectares) of arable land per capita, which more than third of the average in the European Union (EU), which is 22 acres of arable land per capita (data for year 2022). This area did not change significantly between 2000 and 2022, which indicates that Slovenia maintains its production potential.

Good

Land areas, prepared for irrigation, have increased from 4,554 ha to 6,576 ha in the period 2000-2023, and their share in total utilized agricultural area from 0.9% to 1.4%. The water consumption per hectare of irrigated land, which strongly depends on weather conditions in each year, has decreased since 2000. Slovenia belongs to the group of EU countries with the smallest share of utilized agricultural area ready for irrigation.

Greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, mainly methane and nitrous oxide, decreased by 16.3% from 1986 to 2022. The largest declines occurred in pig and cattle production and in fertilizer application to agricultural crops. The rapid decline in emissions was typical of the early years of this period until 2013. From 2013 to 2016, emissions increased. They were steady between 2016 and 2021 and decreased in 2022.
