Environmental indicators in Slovenia


Environmental indicators are based on graphs, maps and assessments and as such present environmental trends in Slovenia. The indicators represent one of the four pillars of our environmental reporting, and are prepared in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act. The Environmental Indicators in Slovenia website enables users to browse among 180 indicators. They are based on numerical data and they indicate the state, characteristics and trends of environmental development in Slovenia. They are prepared using a systematic approach based on data and monitoring, as shown in the information pyramid.

Bad

In 2020, CO2 intensity in the commercial and institutional sector increased further compared to the previous year, to 33 t CO2/million EUR1995, and lagged 0.7 percentage points behind the annual target value. The 2020 target was thus not achieved which is due to a 3.8% reduction in value added caused by the implementation of measures for preventing the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. In comparison to 2010, the intensity was 55% lower.

Bad

Almost all Slovenian households have a washing machine and refrigerator, and they posses more and more dishwashers, dryers and microwaves. While, on the one hand, the consumption of electricity and other resources is reduced due to rapid and exceptional technological improvements (such as smart appliances), it is also increasing the number of these appliances in households, which negates the achievements in efficient use of resources. This is usually referred to as the "Rebound effect".

In Slovenia, tourism has recorded constant growth since 1992, and the number of overnight stays has tripled in the 1930s. We recorded particularly high growth in the last five years before the pandemic, and Slovenia established itself as an attractive green destination. In 2021 and 2022, the arrivals and overnight stays of domestic guests increased, but the share of foreign guests dropped significantly due to the pandemic. Otherwise, trips by households of all size categories declined in Slovenia in 2020, especially for single-member households.

The indicator mainly shows the unidentifiable direction of development. The majority of data were available only for a limited period and therefore, reliable estimation of trends is not possible. Cereals are the predominant group of crops in Slovenia. Areas for growing green fodder crops and industrial plants are increasing, while the production of root and tuber crops has stabilized on two percent of arable land. A slow diversification of crop species is observed; particularly favorable is the increase in the share of legumes.

Good

One of the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions in Slovenia is road traffic, as passenger vehicles contribute as much as 20 % of all greenhouse gas emissions. It is estimated that, due to the smaller role of public passenger transport in Slovenia, it is necessary to achieve as much as 2/3 reduction of GHG emissions by electrifying the vehicle fleet, which dictates the replacement of existing vehicles with fossil fuels. with electric vehicles (battery and plug-in hybrids EV).

Bad

In the period 2002-2021, the highest exposure to ozone concentrations were detected in the Primorska region in summer where air quality measuring stations in Koper and Nova Gorica detected highest ozone concentrations in ambient air. There are some differences from year to year in a level of ozone exposure due to meteorological conditions in the warm half of the year and other regional characteristics.
