Of all newborn deaths in Europe are (12.9 %) from respiratory diseases. Data for Slovenia show that due to respiratory disease in 2012, died on average 8.3% of all newborn deaths aged 28-364 days (Institute of Public Health, 2013). Studies have shown a link between the level of air pollution and infant mortality due to respiratory diseases, but it is very complicated, mainly due to various external factors (allergens, cigarette smoke, diet, lifestyle, etc.).

A measure to reduce the infant mortality rate due to respiratory diseases is prevention of exposure to risk factors that can lead to premature death. Since there are a number of risk factors causing premature deaths of infants, the environmental field can indeed address this issue by reducing the level of particulate matter air pollution.
