The value of agricultural output in Slovenia fluctuates in the period 1995–2020, which can be a consequence of fluctuation of changes in prices of agricultural products, changes in the volume of agricultural production or changes in both. In last couple of years, the key factor is the physical volume of production, which fluctuates markedly due to changing natural (weather) conditions. Similarly, the value of agricultural output, calculated per capita, fluctuates in the analyzed period, with long-term downward trend. Compared to 1995, the value of agricultural output per capita in 2020 decreased by 17%. Slovenia belongs to the lower third of EU–27 member state countries, and reaches around 71% of the European average for the period 2005–2020.

The indicator presents the value of agricultural output per capita in Slovenia in the period 1995–2020, In general, the value of agricultural output is influenced by the changes in prices of agricultural products, by the physical volume of production or a combination of both. Prices of agricultural products in Slovenia are strongly influenced by the prices in the markets in the region, whereas the physical volume of production fluctuates mainly due to the changing natural (weather) conditions. Value of the indicator is foremost in monitoring and simple comparison of year-to-year changes over a longer period of time, because the value of production is expressed in chain linked volumes in constant prices of selected reference year. A comparison with the other member states of the European Union (EU) and United Kingdom is also given for the period 2005–2020.

Goals

  • Increasing the value of agricultural production per capita by achieving higher producer prices of agricultural products and optimal physical volume of agricultural production.
  • Ensure the optimal value of agricultural production, which enables stable food security.

In the analyzed period 1995–2020, the number of inhabitants in Slovenia increased; in 2020 almost two million one hundred thousand people lived in Slovenia, which is 108 thousand more than in 2000 (+ 5%).

In the period 1995–2020, the value of agricultural output at basic prices in Slovenia was on average a little over € 1.1 billion (current prices, current exchange rate), and it fluctuated noticeably, both in nominal and real terms. Compared to 1995, the agricultural output in 2020 decreased by around 12% in real terms.

In general, changes in the value of agricultural output are influenced by changes in prices of agricultural products, changes in the physical volume of production, or a combination of both. Prices of agricultural products in Slovenia are strongly influenced by the prices on the markets of countries in the region, and they are also characterized by a long-term downward trend. The physical volume of production (especially of crop production) fluctuates mainly due to changing natural (weather) conditions, especially in the last few years. The agricultural output was markedly lower in the years 2003, 2013 and 2017 due to the lower physical volume of agricultural output because of the unfavorable weather conditions, while in 2009, 2010 and 2016 the value was lower due to decrease in prices. In terms of value of agricultural output (and also in terms of income), the most favorable year was 2018, when the crop harvests were abundant, especially of fruit and grapes. In 2020, according to SORS estimate (Žaucer, 2021b), the value agricultural output remained at the level of the previous year; the fall in prices was largely mitigated by increase in the physical volume of agricultural production.

For the analysis of the long-term trends, the value of agricultural output is presented in terms of chain linked volumes, at constant prices of the selected reference year (2015). This way the effects of price changes are eliminated (price and quality structure among products/services of specific years is better taken into account); changes in the output value are thus attributed only to volume changes. Tis way, growth rates can be directly compared between selected years. We can conclude that in Slovenia in the analyzed period (1995–2020) the value of agricultural output, calculated per capita, fluctuates, with long-term downward trend. Compared to 1995, the value of agricultural output per capita in 2020 decreased by 17%.

A comparison of the agricultural output (chain linked volumes, in constant prices 2010) per capita with the other EU–27 member state countries and United Kingdom shows considerable diversity among countries. In the period 2005-2020, the highest average values were calculated for Denmark (120% above the European average), the Netherlands and Ireland, and the lowest for Malta (around a third of the European average), Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Slovenia belongs to the lower third of EU–27 member state countries, and reaches around 71% of the European average for the period 2005–2020.

A similar indicator is calculated by the FAO as part of a package of food security indicators in the dimension of "stability" (“per capita food production variability”), except that it is calculated in different monetary units (international $).
