Environmental indicators in Slovenia


Environmental indicators are based on graphs, maps and assessments and as such present environmental trends in Slovenia. The indicators represent one of the four pillars of our environmental reporting, and are prepared in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act. The Environmental Indicators in Slovenia website enables users to browse among 180 indicators. They are based on numerical data and they indicate the state, characteristics and trends of environmental development in Slovenia. They are prepared using a systematic approach based on data and monitoring, as shown in the information pyramid.

Measurements of soil samples from different agricultural land uses over the period 2015-2023 show that phosphorus (P) is deficient in soils of extensive orchards, olive groves and pastures, below optimum in intensive orchards, vineyards and grasslands, and adequate in arable land. The low phosphorus content is mainly due to the natural low content of this nutrient in Slovenian soils and leaching. Potassium (K) contents are generally higher than P, reflecting Slovenia's better natural soil K supply.

In 2024, agricultural land covered 18.8% of nature protection areas of various types in Slovenia. 26.3% of all agricultural land is included in nature protection areas. In the past, agriculture in Slovenia has contributed to high diversity of species and habitats and played a key role in the shaping of cultural landscape. Creation of protected areas is only the first step towards the preservation of traditional agricultural habitats; these habitats will only be preserved if the farmers have an economic interest in maintaining them.

In Slovenia, the intensity of agricultural production increased moderately in the period 2000–2023. The main reasons for this are the continuous decrease of the number of agricultural holdings and the relatively stable volume of agricultural production. The concentration took place primarily in the direction of improving the labour intensity of agricultural production or reducing the labour input per unit of area or product. In the period 2000-2020 the stocking density per hectare of utilized agricultural area is slightly decreased.

Concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and total nitrogen oxides in ambient air do not exceed the prescribed limit values. Consequently, they are not harmful for human health and vegetation.

In Slovenia, we cultivate slightly more than 8 acres (0.08 hectares) of arable land per capita, which more than third of the average in the European Union (EU), which is 22 acres of arable land per capita (data for year 2022). This area did not change significantly between 2000 and 2022, which indicates that Slovenia maintains its production potential.

Greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, mainly methane and nitrous oxide, decreased by 16.3% from 1986 to 2022. The largest declines occurred in pig and cattle production and in fertilizer application to agricultural crops. The rapid decline in emissions was typical of the early years of this period until 2013. From 2013 to 2016, emissions increased. They were steady between 2016 and 2021 and decreased in 2022.
