Environmental indicators in Slovenia


Environmental indicators are based on graphs, maps and assessments and as such present environmental trends in Slovenia. The indicators represent one of the four pillars of our environmental reporting, and are prepared in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act. The Environmental Indicators in Slovenia website enables users to browse among 180 indicators. They are based on numerical data and they indicate the state, characteristics and trends of environmental development in Slovenia. They are prepared using a systematic approach based on data and monitoring, as shown in the information pyramid.

Good

The Slovenian EHVZ database (Hydrography and Water Land Records) contains 67.549 watercourses with total length of 41.071 km. Total area of still waters is 24 km2 and river reservoirs 31 km2.

For use in water management, water land areas are delineated. Total area of water land in Slovenia is 387 km2, which is 1, 9 % of continental area of the Republic of Slovenia. Marine water land area is 214 km2.

Good

Slovenia has a fairly high level of energy intensity that is decreasing, especially in the last few years. Average yearly decrease rate in the period 2005-2021 was 2.7 %. Compared to EU-27 Slovenia had 37 % higher intensity in 2020, being 11 % points lower than in 2005.

Bad

Data for Slovenia show that number of newly diagnosed cases of melanoma in persons under 55 years of age is increasing. Melanoma is more often diagnosed by women then by men. Most of the melanoma cases are most likely related to acute, occasional and excessive sun exposure, mainly in childhood. Nevertheless there is a 20-40 year time delay between the sun exposure and the occurrence of cancer, the incidence of melanoma in persons under 55 years of age, is a good indicator of the final success of measures taken against excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation in childhood.


The number and area of wildfires varies greatly between years, as the incidence depends on the weather conditions in each year. In Slovenia, the western, sub-Mediterranean part of the country is the most endangered. Climate change will also pose a greater fire risk in the eastern part of Slovenia.

Neutral

Leukemia is the most common children cancer. It represents 25 to 30% of all new diagnosed cancer cases in children younger than 15 years in the world. Causal mechanisms for the occurrence of leukemia in children are poorly known, but it is often referred connection with environmental risk factors. Data from European cancer registries indicate that the incidence rate of childhood leukemia between 1970 and 1999 grew on average by 0.7% per annum in the last twenty years has been 1% per year, mostly in countries with higher economic status (SES).

Bad

In 2019, the material footprint of households in Slovenia amounted to around 15 tons per inhabitant, which is more than the EU average (14.6 tons per inhabitant). Finland, Romania, Estonia and Luxembourg have the largest material footprint with around 28-29 tonnes per capita, the Netherlands the lowest with 7.4 tonnes.
