Final energy consumption amounted to 4,719 ktoe in 2021 and increased by 7.1 % compared to the previous year. The increase was mainly a result of a economic recovery after the coronavirus pandemic and a colder year 2021. There was an increase in all sectors. Final energy consumption was 177 ktoe (3.6%) lower than the indicative target value for 2021 from the currrent National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP). The annual indicative target from the proposal for the NECP update was also achieved. In the period 2000‒2021, final energy consumption increased by 3.9 %.

In 2021, taking into account only the production of energy from RES in Slovenia, Slovenia achieved a 24.6% share of RES in gross final energy consumption, which is 4.8 percentage points more than in 2005. To achieve a binding 25% national target share of RES under the Directive 2009/28/EC, Slovenia purchased the missing production from RES. The increase in the share of RES in 2021 is primarily the result of an increase in the use of RES in the heating and cooling sector. The share in electricity production still lags behind the planned development significantly.

Since 2012, the installed capacity of the systems for the production of electricity from RES has increased by 47.3%. More than half of this increase, 24.7%, was achieved in the last three years. The indicator is currently on a trajectory of achieving the indicative targets until 2030 set in the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP).

In 2021, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from sources according to the Regulation (EU) 2023/857 increased by 5.5% compared to the previous year and were lower than the annual target by 8.6%, which means that the target was achieved. GHG emissions decreased in the waste and electricity and heat production sectors, and the most in the consumer sector. In all other sectors emissions increased, with the exception of the agriculture, where they remained at the 2020 level.

According to the first estimates for 2022, GHG emissions per unit of electricity produced amounted to 208 gCO₂/kWh. In the period 1992–2022, the intensity of GHG emissions decreased by 52.8%. Compared to the EU-27 average, it was in Slovenia in 2022 17.1% lower.
