Population trends of selected bird species show that the state of the environment in the cultural landscape is deteriorating, especially in some parts such as Prekmurje and Ljubljansko barje. Populations of selected forest bird species are in moderate decline, while wetland conditions have not changed in the last few years. Bird populations that overwinter on Slovenian rivers and other water bodies are stable or growing. Minor fluctuations are part of natural population changes.

The movement of bird populations nesting in the cultural landscape is shown by three selected species: white stork, corncrake, and great crested grebe. The population of white stork (Ciconia ciconia) in Slovenia is moderately increasing. Nesting pairs inhabit new mesoregions and their numbers are increasing in areas where the species has not historically been present. While population trends in almost all mesoregions are positive or stable, the trend at the Mura level (Prekmurje) is typically negative. Corncrake (Crex crex) population on the Ljubljana Marshes continues (Ljubljansko barje) to decline.
