In 2017, the CO₂ intensity in the commercial and institutional sector decreased compared to the year before by almost a quarter to 36.4 t CO₂/mio EUR₁₉₉₅, which is 3 % below the indicative annual target. In comparison to 2010, the intensity was lower by half. Since the energy statistics for this sector is calculated as the difference between the total energy consumption and the energy consumption of all other sectors, the indicator is rough, which makes it difficult to interpret the year-on-year changes and to forecast the achievement of the 2020 target.
