[PR12] Age of vehicle fleet

Key message
Bad

The average age of passenger cars in Slovenia increased from 6.8 years in 1992 to 10.6 years in 2021. The share of passenger cars by age has also changed – every decade from 2001 for around 50 %. On the other hand, the share of passenger cars aged less than three years is decreasing for around 30 % every decade. The shares of other types of vehicles showed more fluctuations during the last two decades and smaller changes in respective shares. However, there are now in general more vehicles older than 12 years and less vehicles aged less than three years. The fluctuations are timed with the recession of 2008 and the epidemic of COVID-19 in 2019 and 2020. This means that new technologies are introduced too slowly. Due to this Slovenian vehicle fleet is mostly less environmentally friendly. In comparison to EU-27, the average age of passenger cars has increased since 2000, from 6.8 years in 2000 to 7.4 in 2014 and 11,8 years in 2020. Because customers tend to hold on to their vehicles (all types of vehicles) longer than before this reflects in increased average age of the vehicle fleet.

The indicator shows the average age of passenger cars for the period 1992-2021 and proportion of passenger cars by age for the period 1992-2021 in Slovenia. The indicator also shows the proportion of heavy duty vehicles, buses and mopeds and motorcycles by age for the period 1992-2021 in Slovenia. The proportion of passenger cars by age in European countries is shown for 2012 for selected countries from EU-27, for 2016 for all EU-28 countries and for 2020 for all EU-27 countries.

The environmental and safety standards of vehicles are constantly improving. Therefore, new vehicles are on average less polluting, generate less noise, consume less fuel and are generally safer. The indicator of average age of passenger cars and other vehicles thus indirectly expresses their environmental efficiency.
