The daily mobility of the population is a fundamental indicator of the performance and development trends of the transport system, and it also indirectly reflects the impact of the transport system on the environment - the greater the use of sustainable travel modes, the lower the impact of the transport system on the environment. In 2021, a resident of Slovenia made an average of 2.2 trips per day, the length of the trip was 31 km on average (27 km in the EU) and it took approximately 52 minutes (80 minutes in the EU).

Good

Slovenia has participated in the European Mobility Week (EMW) initiative from the very beginning. Its implementation has become an important form of promotion and encouragement of sustainable mobility planning in the last decade. Since the beginning of the implementation in 2002 165 Slovenian municipalities have participated in the EMW initiative at least once, and 7 municipalities every year. The number of participating municipalities has increased over the years and has already reached almost 80% of Slovenian municipalities.

The intensity of GHG emissions from fuels and energy in transport in Slovenia was 4.7% lower than the baseline in 2021, which is 1.3 percentage points below the target reduction. Although the intensity is decreasing, the pace is too slow. The largest contribution to reducing intensity comes from the blending of biofuels. In the EU, the largest reductions were achieved by Sweden and Finland, along with 11 other countries that achieved reductions of 6% or more.

The number of inhabitants who live in the impact area of major roads outside urban areas has decreased. In 2017, around 16,000 fewer inhabitants were exposed to high noise levels throughout the day and during the night compared to 2012. In urban areas, the number of inhabitants who are exposed to road traffic noise has not decreased. The number of inhabitants who are exposed to high noise levels throughout the day has remained at the same level as in 2012 and is estimated at 64,000.

The number of inhabitants who are exposed to traffic noise along major roads outside urban areas is gradually decreasing. In 2017, around 16,000 fewer inhabitants were exposed to high road traffic noise levels throughout the day compared to 2012. There is an important difference between inhabitants who live in the impact area of major motorways and highways, and inhabitants who live in the impact area of major main and regional roads.

The number of inhabitants who live in the impact area of major railways outside urban areas and are exposed to rail traffic noise has not changed significantly in the past years. In 2017, around 7,000 inhabitants were exposed to high noise levels throughout the day and around 10,700 inhabitants during the night. Between 2012 and 2017, the number of inhabitants who are exposed to high rail traffic noise did not decrease.

Good

The quantity of end-of-life tyres collected for recovery increased dramatically when producer liability was introduced. Arround 16,000 tonnes of end-of-life tyres is produced, which is about 8kg per capita. In 2015, 65% of end-of-life-tyres have been recovered through material recovery and 35% through energy recovery.

The results of the REUS 2025 survey show that the willingness of Slovenian households to use alternative means of transport is increasing. Despite this, the personal car remains the absolutely dominant form of transport, and its use over shorter distances is even strengthening. The main reason for this is undoubtedly the large gap between users' wishes and the actual quality of public transport. The main reasons for not using public transport remain the same as in the past: poor connections, being too time-consuming, and inadequate schedules.

The REUS 2025 survey reveals that the share of newly registered electric and hybrid vehicles has grown strongly, representing almost a third (32%) of all new vehicle registrations in 2024, which is eight times more than in 2019. However, their share among all passenger vehicles reaches a modest 6%. When purchasing an alternative-powertrain vehicle, households opt for hybrids (26%) much more often than for fully electric models (6%), which is likely a result of more favorable prices and less dependence on charging infrastructure.

Large majority of registered passenger cars are still powered by conventional fuels (gasoline and diesel).  Although the total share of alternative-fuel vehicles tripled in the period from 2019 to 2025, it still remains very small.
