Environmental indicators in Slovenia


Environmental indicators are based on graphs, maps and assessments and as such present environmental trends in Slovenia. The indicators represent one of the four pillars of our environmental reporting, and are prepared in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act. The Environmental Indicators in Slovenia website enables users to browse among 180 indicators. They are based on numerical data and they indicate the state, characteristics and trends of environmental development in Slovenia. They are prepared using a systematic approach based on data and monitoring, as shown in the information pyramid.

Good

The decrease in SO2 emissions from transport is significantly influenced by the tightening of legislation governing the concentration of sulphur in liquid fuels (since 2009, it has been limited to 10 mg/kg for both petrol and diesel). The limit value of concentration of sulphur in fuels used in road transport in 2015 was not exceeded in Slovenia or in the EU-28; the same applies to air and maritime transport.

Good

Air pollutant emissions have decreased in the period 2005−2020 to the levels that enable Slovenia achievement of its 2020 targets. But to reach 2030 targets additional decrease is needed. Reduction of emissions contributed to lower impact on ecosystems and human health, as emissions of pollutants that contribute to acidification, ozone precursors and particles, decreased by half compared to 2005.

Bad

The average age of passenger cars in Slovenia increased from 6.8 years in 1992 to 10.6 years in 2021. The share of passenger cars by age has also changed – every decade from 2001 for around 50 %. On the other hand, the share of passenger cars aged less than three years is decreasing for around 30 % every decade. The shares of other types of vehicles showed more fluctuations during the last two decades and smaller changes in respective shares. However, there are now in general more vehicles older than 12 years and less vehicles aged less than three years.

Bad

Slovenia is at the infamous top of European countries in terms of the share of household expenditure on personal mobility. In Slovenia, households spent 17% of household funds on personal mobility. In 2021, namely 10% for operation and 6% for the purchase of vehicles. A smaller share, just over 0.5%, was allocated to public transport. This does not take into account the annual depreciation cost of the car, which is the main cost for personal mobility in many households.

Bad

Data for Slovenia show that number of newly diagnosed cases of melanoma in persons under 55 years of age is increasing. Melanoma is more often diagnosed by women then by men. Most of the melanoma cases are most likely related to acute, occasional and excessive sun exposure, mainly in childhood. Nevertheless there is a 20-40 year time delay between the sun exposure and the occurrence of cancer, the incidence of melanoma in persons under 55 years of age, is a good indicator of the final success of measures taken against excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation in childhood.

Neutral

Leukemia is the most common children cancer. It represents 25 to 30% of all new diagnosed cancer cases in children younger than 15 years in the world. Causal mechanisms for the occurrence of leukemia in children are poorly known, but it is often referred connection with environmental risk factors. Data from European cancer registries indicate that the incidence rate of childhood leukemia between 1970 and 1999 grew on average by 0.7% per annum in the last twenty years has been 1% per year, mostly in countries with higher economic status (SES).
