Environmental indicators in Slovenia


Environmental indicators are based on graphs, maps and assessments and as such present environmental trends in Slovenia. The indicators represent one of the four pillars of our environmental reporting, and are prepared in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act. The Environmental Indicators in Slovenia website enables users to browse among 180 indicators. They are based on numerical data and they indicate the state, characteristics and trends of environmental development in Slovenia. They are prepared using a systematic approach based on data and monitoring, as shown in the information pyramid.

In 2022, the poverty risk rate in Slovenia was 12.1%. Compared to the previous year, it increased by 0.4%. In 2022, there were 251,000 residents living below the poverty risk threshold, which means their incomes were lower than €827 per month, the poverty risk threshold. The poverty risk rate in Slovenia is below the EU average. In 2021, Slovenia ranked third in the lowest poverty risk rate among EU-27 countries. However, in 2022, it tied with Hungary for the second position.

In Slovenia, over 70% of the energy supply is available to end users. The share is by far the most affected by the efficiency of electricity and heat production.

In the production of electricity and heat in thermal power plants, less than half of the energy invested was lost in 2021. Compared to the EU-27 countries, Slovenia was in the bottom third of countries.

In 2020, the production of electricity from CHP accounted for just under 7% of the total production in Slovenia.

Slovenia has a fairly high level of energy intensity that is decreasing, especially in the last few years. Average yearly decrease rate in the period 2005-2021 was 2.7 %. Compared to EU-27 Slovenia had 37 % higher intensity in 2020, being 11 % points lower than in 2005.

Air pollutant emissions have decreased in the period 2005−2020 to the levels that enable Slovenia achievement of its 2020 targets. But to reach 2030 targets additional decrease is needed. Reduction of emissions contributed to lower impact on ecosystems and human health, as emissions of pollutants that contribute to acidification, ozone precursors and particles, decreased by half compared to 2005.

Passenger car ownership in Slovenia has almost doubled over the last 20 years and has an above-average growth rate. It is closely connected to the use of passenger cars. Since 2008, passenger car ownership in Slovenia has been growing more slowly as a result of the economic recession. Also, motorisation level (expressed in the number of cars per thousand inhabitants) in Slovenia exceeds the average rate of motorisation in the EU as well as in numerous more economically developed EU countries.

Bad

The average age of passenger cars in Slovenia increased from 6.8 years in 1992 to 10.6 years in 2021. The share of passenger cars by age has also changed – every decade from 2001 for around 50 %. On the other hand, the share of passenger cars aged less than three years is decreasing for around 30 % every decade. The shares of other types of vehicles showed more fluctuations during the last two decades and smaller changes in respective shares. However, there are now in general more vehicles older than 12 years and less vehicles aged less than three years.
