Slovenian forests are over-mature, the current ratio of forest development phases is unfavourable, forest regeneration is too slow, or the areas of forests under restoration are too small to significantly change the share of forest development phases and thus ensure sustainable forest development. The role of forests as a carbon sink is at risk.
The trend in the ratio of development phases in the period 2009–2021 is not good, since the share of the younger development phases (young-growth, pole stands), which are lacking, is not increasing. On a positive note, the share of stands in a regeneration phase is increasing; this might indicate that there is an accelerated introduction of mature forests to regeneration, which could lead to an increase in the share of younger development phases.
