The share of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) disposed of within mixed municipal waste annually in the period 2020-2023 represented an average of 0.8% of collected mixed municipal waste. The share of waste batteries and accumulators (WBAs) was even lower, representing an average of 0.03% of all collected mixed municipal waste in the same period annually. The amount of separately collected WEEE has been increasing over the years. In Slovenia, just over 16,600 tonnes of WEEE were collected separately in 2023, which is almost 8% more than in 2022.

Good

In 2023, around 182 million pieces of plastic carrier bags were placed on the Slovenian market, of which 99% were those with a wall thickness of less than 50 microns (light plastic carrier bags). In Slovenia, the consumption of lightweight plastic carrier bags amounted to 85 bags per capita in 2023 In the same year, 145.9 million pieces of single-use food containers made wholly or partly of plastic and 174.4 million pieces of single-use beverage cups made wholly or partly of plastic were placed on the Slovenian market.

Neutral

In Slovenia, just over 1.1 million tonnes of municipal waste were generated in 2023, which is 7 % more than the previous year, of which 69 % was collected separately. 26 % of municipal waste generated was packaging waste. In 2023, more than 294.000 tonnes of packaging waste were generated in Slovenia, of which more than one fifth was plastic packaging waste.

Good

The amount of waste from coal combustion is decreasing as a result of the reduction in the use of coal for electricity generation. In 2022, the amount was 15% lower than the previous year. By far the largest source is the Šoštanj thermal power plant. Most of the waste is used as fill material in mines.

Neutral

Over the period 1990-2022, the amount of spent nuclear fuel, the only high-level radioactive waste, increased at an average rate of 5% per year. In the absence of a satisfactory permanent storage solution, there are concerns about the accumulation of this waste.

In 2008, the trend of reducing annual quantities of deposited waste continued both in landfills that are part of public infrastructure as well in landfills operated by the industry. In 2008, 835.3 thousand tonnes of waste were deposited on landfills belonging to public infrastructure and 207.8 thousand tonnes were deposited on landfills operated by industry.

Since 2004, the share of collected waste oils in relation to the quantity of oils sold grew from 15% to 30% in 2007, which is the target figure. In recent years, the share of recovered or incinerated waste oils compared to deposited oils is also increasing, which shows that this waste is used as additional energy-generating product. According to 2004 data, 4145 tonnes of waste oils were recovered, and 134 tonnes deposited.

Good

The collected quantities of health-care waste increased after the adoption of the regulation governing this waste. Collected quantities of waste medicines are also expected to increase, since collection in pharmacies was introduced at the end of 2009.

Good

The majority of waste edible oil is exported to other EU Member States for recycling into biodiesel. According to the official records of the Environmental Agency of the Republic of Slovenia, there is no industrial biodiesel production from waste edible oils in Slovenia.

Bad

Collected quantities of organic kitchen waste more than doubled after the implementation of the regulation, but its management has so far failed to achieve the set objectives. Deficiencies are particularly evident in composting. About 3,000 tonnes of such waste were composted in 2007, but so far only one entity obtained the environmental permit required for this activity.
