Environmental indicators in Slovenia


Environmental indicators are based on graphs, maps and assessments and as such present environmental trends in Slovenia. The indicators represent one of the four pillars of our environmental reporting, and are prepared in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act. The Environmental Indicators in Slovenia website enables users to browse among 180 indicators. They are based on numerical data and they indicate the state, characteristics and trends of environmental development in Slovenia. They are prepared using a systematic approach based on data and monitoring, as shown in the information pyramid.

Good

Although electricity and heat generation increased by 30% between 1990 and 2021, CO2 emissions decreased by 31.5%, mainly due to the increase in generation efficiency, as well as to the increase in RES and nuclear generation. SO2 emissions decreased by almost 99%, mainly due to the installation of desulphurisation, the increase in generation efficiency and share of RES and nuclear generation.

Bad

In 2020, specific CO2 emissions in the residential sector amounted to 9.2 kg CO2 eq/m2 or 3% more than the previous year and were 0.4 percentage points below the annual target,. The 2020 target was thus not achieved. The increase was mainly due to the increase of CO2 emissions from the use of fuels in this sector by almost 4%. The increase was caused on one hand by the colder year, and on the other hand by the coronavirus pandemic and the implementation of measures for preventing the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Bad

After the increase in number of total passenger kilometres in public passenger transport in 2019, in 2020 the number of total passenger kilometres in PPT sharply decreased. Passenger kilometres decreased to the lowest level in the observed period in both rail transport and road public passenger transport. The main reason for such decrease in passenger kilometres is the large reduction in transport activity as a result of the measures taken during the COVID-19 epidemic.

Bad

In accordance with the set targets, it is necessary to ensure faster growth of rail freight transport in comparison to road freight transport. This was not achieved in 2020. The share of rail freight transport in total freight transport with goods loaded or unloaded in Slovenia remained under the projection value of the indicator for 2020. The number of tonne-kilometres in road transport increased by 19,2% in the period 2011−2020. In the same period, the number of tonne-kilometres achieved in rail transport increased by only 13%.

Neutral

The indicator monitors the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development by comparing the HDI - the human development index and the ecological footprint. Between 1990 and 2019, the value of the Human Development Index (HDI) increased from 0.774 to 0.917 (by 18.5%). Slovenia is ranked among the countries with a very high human development index, in 22nd place out of 189 countries included in the calculations. In general, the higher the HDI of a country is, the higher the ecological footprint is.

The estimated average long-term intakes of metals (lead, cadmium and mercury) into the human body through food in the adult population of Slovenia do not exceed the reference points (BMDL) or health-based guideline values (tolerable daily/weekly intakes), and in children lead and cadmium on average, similarly to the EU, may be exceeded.
