Environmental indicators in Slovenia


Environmental indicators are based on graphs, maps and assessments and as such present environmental trends in Slovenia. The indicators represent one of the four pillars of our environmental reporting, and are prepared in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act. The Environmental Indicators in Slovenia website enables users to browse among 180 indicators. They are based on numerical data and they indicate the state, characteristics and trends of environmental development in Slovenia. They are prepared using a systematic approach based on data and monitoring, as shown in the information pyramid.

Good

The state of wildlife in Slovenia is favourable; larger epidemics have not been identified. The number of herbivorous ungulates as well as wild boars has decreased. An increase in wildlife losses due to road kill raises concerns. The total amount of damage caused by wildlife has decreased.

Wildlife management includes all animal and plant species. Regulation of wildlife populations is based on game management plans that are submitted for adoption to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food by the Slovenia Forest Service in accordance with a prescribed procedure.

Land areas, prepared for irrigation, have increased from 4,554 ha to 6,414 ha in the period 2000-2024, and their share in total utilized agricultural area from 0.9% to 1.3%. The water consumption per hectare of irrigated land, which strongly depends on weather conditions in each year, has decreased since 2000. Slovenia belongs to the group of EU countries with the smallest share of utilized agricultural area ready for irrigation.

Final energy consumption amounted to 4,491 ktoe in 2023 and decreased by 5 % compared to the previous year. There was a decrease in all sectors, with the exception of other use. Final energy consumption was 380 ktoe (- 7.8%) lower than the 2023 indicative target value from the National Energy and Climate Plan from 2020 (NECP 2020) and 282 ktoe (- 5.9 %) lower than the value from the National Energy and Climate Plan from 2024 (NECP 2024). The indicative annual target was thus achieved. In the period 2000‒2023, final energy consumption decreased by 1 %.

Bad

In 2022, taking into account only the production of energy from RES in Slovenia, Slovenia achieved a 22.9% share of RES in gross final energy consumption. To achieve a binding 25% national target share of RES under the Directive 2009/28/EC, Slovenia purchased the missing production from RES. In 2023, the share of RES in gross final energy consumption was 25.1%, which is 5.3 percentage points more than in 2005. The increase in the share of RES in 2023 is the result of an increase in the use of RES in the electricity production sector.

In 2022, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from sources according to the Regulation (EU) 2018/842 increased by 3.2% compared to the previous year, but in 2023 they decreased by 4.4% and were 7% below the annual target set by Regulation, thus achieving the indicative annual value. The 2030 target set by the National Energy and Climate Plan from 2020 (NECP 2020) is more ambitious and in 2023 the indicative annual value set by the NECP 2020 was not achieved, lagging behind by 0.5 percentage points.

In the period 1992–2023 nitrogen surplus in Slovenian agriculture decreased. Trend analysis for this period shows that gross nitrogen surplus decreased on average by 1.4 kg N/ha per year or by 54%, and the net surplus by 1.2 kg N/ha per year or by 85%. The lower surplus was mainly due to a 43% increase in nitrogen removal by crops and a 6% decrease in nitrogen input per hectare of utilized agricultural area. A lower excess of nitrogen indicates better nitrogen management in agriculture and consequently a reduction in emissions of nitrogen compounds into the environment.
