Environmental indicators in Slovenia

Environmental indicators are based on graphs, maps and assessments and as such present environmental trends in Slovenia. The indicators represent one of the four pillars of our environmental reporting, and are prepared in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act. The Environmental Indicators in Slovenia website enables users to browse among 180 indicators. They are based on numerical data and they indicate the state, characteristics and trends of environmental development in Slovenia. They are prepared using a systematic approach based on data and monitoring, as shown in the information pyramid.

The REUS 2025 survey reveals that the share of newly registered electric and hybrid vehicles has grown strongly, representing almost a third (32%) of all new vehicle registrations in 2024, which is eight times more than in 2019. However, their share among all passenger vehicles reaches a modest 6%. When purchasing an alternative-powertrain vehicle, households opt for hybrids (26%) much more often than for fully electric models (6%), which is likely a result of more favorable prices and less dependence on charging infrastructure.

In 2023, the number of employees in the environmental goods and services sector increased by 7,4 %. The share of employees in this sector in relation to all employees in Slovenia has not changed much in recent years. Slovenia's goal is to increase the number of green jobs, the target value has, however, not been set. In order to compare the situation in Slovenia with that in the EU, changes compared to the previous year are monitored.

Bad

In 2025, the energy reduction in the energy efficiency obligation scheme (EEOS) and alternative measure, t. i. Eco Fund and Borzen programs, amounted to 411 GWh. Compared to the previous year, they decreased by 39%, mainly due to a 56% reduction in energy savings achieved by the Eco Fund program. New annual energy savings achieved within EEOS remained at approximately the same level as in 2024, with obligated parties largely meeting their obligations by using unused surplus savings from previous years.

Bad

Incentives that go against the goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions continued to increase after 2020, primarily due to extensive emergency measures introduced in response to rising energy prices. Excluding these measures, subsidies decreased by 3% in 2024 compared with 2020, but increased again in 2025, reaching a level 12% higher than in 2020. Among the largest forms of subsidies are refunds of excise duties on diesel fuel for commercial use, which accounted for 58% of all subsidies in 2024 and 55% in 2025.

Bad

Around two-thirds of the population of Slovenia reports good or very good health, with higher-income residents rating it better than lower-income residents. Although self-rated health has improved in recent years, overweight and obesity are on the rise, and the proportion of residents who eat fruit and vegetables several times a day is decreasing. Overweight and obesity are also common problems in the European Union.

Over recent decades, emissions of air pollutants from transport decreased. However, road transport remains one of the most significant sources of air pollutant emissions. In Slovenia in 2024 road transport accounted for 43 % to the total emissions of nitrogen oxides. In the period 1990-2024 emissions of substances that cause acidification and emissions of ozone precursors in the transport sector declined by 72 % and 76 %. In the period 2000-2024 emissions of particulate matter decreased by 52 %.
