Environmental indicators in Slovenia

Environmental indicators are based on graphs, maps and assessments and as such present environmental trends in Slovenia. The indicators represent one of the four pillars of our environmental reporting, and are prepared in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act. The Environmental Indicators in Slovenia website enables users to browse among 180 indicators. They are based on numerical data and they indicate the state, characteristics and trends of environmental development in Slovenia. They are prepared using a systematic approach based on data and monitoring, as shown in the information pyramid.

Did you know?

Good

Most of industrial energy is consumed in the production of metals. In the period 2008-2012, the efficiency of energy use has increased, while the trends in individual sectors are very different and diverse.

Good

In 2024, 83.1% of all heat in district heating (DH) systems was produced in energy-efficient district heating systems, i.e. systems meeting at least one of the criteria defined in Article 50 of the Energy Efficiency Act (ZURE). Compared with 2023, this share decreased by 4.5 percentage points. The combined share of heat from renewable energy sources and waste heat amounted to 20.5% in 2024, which was 0.7 percentage points lower than in the previous year, but 4.8 percentage points higher than in 2016.

Good

From 2012 to 2024, the installed capacity of the systems for the production of electricity from RES has increased by 78,5%. More than three quarters of that increase, 77,2%, was achieved in the last five years. The indicator is currently on a trajectory of achieving the annual indicative values until 2030 set in the National Energy and Climate Plan from 2024 (NECP 2024).

Bad

Final energy consumption in buildings amounted to 1,475 ktoe in 2024 and was 2% above the annual indicative value, which was therefore not achieved. Compared to the previous year, it remained at approximately the same level, and compared to 2005, it decreased by 23%. Greenhouse gas GHG emissions in buildings amounted to 1,100 kt CO₂ eq in 2024, thus the annual indicative value was also not achieved.

Bad

In 2025, 57,118 m2 of total floor area of public sector buildings were renovated within the cohesion policy programs, which was 38% less than in the previous year and the lowest level recorded in the 2018–2025 period. In line with the targets set out in the Long-term strategy for energy renovation of buildings by 2050, the energy renovation of 1,150,000 m² of public sector building floor area was planned for the 2021–2025 period; however, only just over half of this amount, or 578,145 m², was actually renovated.

Neutral

The emission productivity in Slovenia decreased in 2024 and amounted to 3,09 EUR2010/kg CO2 eq. The preliminary estimate for 2025 indicates that emissions productivity has improved, reaching EUR 3.5 EUR2010/kg CO2 eq. The progress in emission productivity in Slovenia when compared to the European Union (EU), is still relatively slow, thus there is a need to further strengthen the connection between economic development and measures for reducing GHG emissions.
