Environmental indicators in Slovenia

Environmental indicators are based on graphs, maps and assessments and as such present environmental trends in Slovenia. The indicators represent one of the four pillars of our environmental reporting, and are prepared in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act. The Environmental Indicators in Slovenia website enables users to browse among 180 indicators. They are based on numerical data and they indicate the state, characteristics and trends of environmental development in Slovenia. They are prepared using a systematic approach based on data and monitoring, as shown in the information pyramid.

In Slovenia, tourism has recorded constant growth since 1992, and the number of overnight stays has tripled in the 1930s. We recorded particularly high growth in the last five years before the pandemic, and Slovenia established itself as an attractive green destination. In 2021 and 2022, the arrivals and overnight stays of domestic guests increased, but the share of foreign guests dropped significantly due to the pandemic. Otherwise, trips by households of all size categories declined in Slovenia in 2020, especially for single-member households.

Although the annual number of road traffic fatalities in Slovenia has been declining for decades and has decreased to about a third since independence, traffic still requires an excessive tax. The number of traffic accidents with victims or serious injuries is at the level of 30 years ago, the number of serious injuries is already 15 years stagnant. Traffic accidents have claimed an average of almost 110 lives per year over the last ten years, and fortunately, the number of deaths in traffic accidents has been slightly decreasing over the past ten years.

Neutral

Primary energy consumption amounted to 6,470 ktoe in 2021 and increased by 2.7 % compared to the previous year. The increase was a result of an increase in the final energy consumption due to the economic recovery after the coronavirus pandemic and a colder year 2021, while the electricity production decreased compared to the previous year. Primary energy consumption was 258 ktoe (3.8%) lower than the indicative target value for 2021 from the currrent National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), while it slightly lagged behind the annual indicative target from the proposal for the NECP update.

Good

In 2021, the energy reduction in the energy efficiency obligation scheme (energy amounted to 610.4 GWh. A bigger share of the savings, 57%, was achieved through the implementation of energy efficiency (EE) and renewable energy source (RES) measures within the Eco Fund programs. The annual target value was exceeded by a third. For 2022, according to preliminary data, the achieved energy savings are estimated at 700.8 GWh, which is 15% more than the previous year and 53% above the target value.

Bad

In 2021, taking into account only the production of energy from RES in Slovenia, Slovenia achieved a 24.6% share of RES in gross final energy consumption, which is 4.8 percentage points more than in 2005. To achieve a binding 25% national target share of RES under the Directive 2009/28/EC, Slovenia purchased the missing production from RES. The increase in the share of RES in 2021 is primarily the result of an increase in the use of RES in the heating and cooling sector. The share in electricity production still lags behind the planned development significantly.

Neutral

Final energy consumption amounted to 4,719 ktoe in 2021 and increased by 7.1 % compared to the previous year. The increase was mainly a result of a economic recovery after the coronavirus pandemic and a colder year 2021. There was an increase in all sectors. Final energy consumption was 177 ktoe (3.6%) lower than the indicative target value for 2021 from the currrent National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP). The annual indicative target from the proposal for the NECP update was also achieved. In the period 2000‒2021, final energy consumption increased by 3.9 %.
